Metamaterials: The Next Photonics RevolutionMay 15, 2012
Phil Saunders of SpaceChannel.org and Nikolay Zheludev of the University of Southampton, UK, have graciously permitted OPN to reproduce this fascinating video, which is related to Zheludevs October OPN feature on metamaterial-induced transparency. It explores the science behind metamaterials—crystalline-like sub-wavelength arrangements of electromagnetic resonators that can exhibit exotic optical properties such as negative refraction and cloaking. With a focus on work being conducted at the University of Southampton, the video describes how metamaterials may usher in the next global technological paradigm shift—the photonics revolution. By controlling light with light, scientists can use metamaterials to transform defense, security and global information networks in ways that previously seemed unimaginable. The speaker will give an overview of the main photonics challenges in Horizon 2020 and will address some of the main ingredients needed for the success for photonics research and innovation, including the key role to be played by close partnerships, between industry and academia, between public and private sources of finance and between the European, national and regional levels. Biography: Thierry Van der Pyl graduated from Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan and is docteur d'état in Informatics from University Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris VI. He was researcher at CNRS and joined the European Commission in 1984 where he held different management positions in the research programs on Information and Communication Technologies, including head of unit of High ...
Bridging Photonics and ComputingMay 17, 2012
Speaker/Performer: Mario Paniccia, Director of Photonics Technology Lab, Intel Sponsor: CITRIS (Ctr for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society), UC Berkeley (Headquarters), Research Exchange seminar Abstract: The silicon chip has been the mainstay of the electronics industry for the last 40 years and has revolutionized the way the world operates. Today a silicon chip the size of a fingernail contains over one billion transistors and has the computing power that only a decade ago would take up an entire room of servers. Recently silicon photonics has attracted a great deal of attention since it offers an opportunity for low cost opto-electronic solutions for applications ranging from telecommunications down to chip-to-chip interconnects as well as possible applications in new emerging areas such as optical sensing and or bio-medical applications. Recent advances and research breakthroughs in silicon photonic device performance over the last few years have shown that silicon can be considered as a material onto which one can build future optical devices. While significant efforts are needed to improve device performance and to "commercialize" these technologies, progress is moving at a rapid rate. If successful, silicon may similarly come to impact optical communications as it has impacted the electronics industry.
Molex 100Gbps silicon photonics demonstration at OFC/NFOEC 2012Apr 25, 2012
Molex 100Gbps silicon photonics with HBMT and FlexPlane optical backplane interconnect demonstration at OFC/NFOEC 2012 At OFC/NFOEC 2012 in Los Angeles CA Molex its 100Gbps silicon photonics based transceiver demonstration platform developed in partnership with Luxtera . The demonstration looped one 25Gbps singlemode optical transmit channel of the transceiver demonstration platform through a Molex HBMT blind mate backplane connector and Molex FlexPlane optical flex circuit to the receive channel of the module. A total of four singlemode optical connections formed this link proving the robustness of the optical link margin which could support up to 4000 meters of singlemode fiber. Un-retimed electrical eye monitoring was done through the demonstration systems high speed electrical breakout cables which are built into the demonstration platform. The Silicon Photonics technology within the demonstration platform is a single CMOS 4x25Gbps transceiver IC incorporating all photonic, analog & digital circuits functions including modulators, photo detectors driven by a single CW DFB laser source and will be incorporated into Molex's zQSFP EDR active optical cable form factor at 4x25Gbps per channel for 100Gbps total bandwidth.
